She is a retired elementary school teacher from the Cypress School District after teaching for 38 years in grades 2 to 6 in Cawthon, Dickerson and Arnold schools. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, her Master of Arts degree in Education from Chapman University in Orange. She founded the John Alvis Memorial Scholarship in her late husband’s name, which emphasizes being an elementary school teacher.

Sally was married to the late John Alvis, who was also a career educator and former Centralia School Board Member for over 20 years. They have two children, Tiffany and Logan, who are both John F. Kennedy High School graduates.

During Sally’s teaching career she was a master teacher for 4 student teachers, a mentor teacher for numerous new teachers and worked in the BTSA program (beginning teacher support & assistance provider). Away from her professional career, Sally was a Girl Scout leader and she attended the 75th anniversary of Girl Scouts at Glen Helen Park in San Bernadino.

Continuing to give back to her community, Sally was an active member of the PTA at Arnold and Miller Elementary schools as well as John F. Kennedy High School. While her two children were growing up, she was an active soccer Mom. She has also been on the La Palma Community and Beautification Committee for eight years. Sally has actively participated in the City’s Summer Concerts in the Park where she helped to raise funds from local businesses to support the concert series, and during the evening concert events she participated in providing programs to the attendees and answering any questions about the concerts.

Prior to joining the Scholarship Board, Sally was a volunteer interviewer for the Foundation as she helped to determine the winner of the various scholarship applicants by personally interviewing students over a number of years.

During 2016, Sally received the La Palma City Volunteer of the Year Award.
